By November 1914, the Great War had become bogged down in the muddy fields between the Kemmelberg and the Wijtschate-Messines Ridge. The Germans occupied Wijtschate and Messines, and turned the villages into impregnable fortresses. From this strategic position, they held the whole region - includingYpres - in a grip of artillery fire. The British looked anxiously for a way to force a breakthrough.
